Đêm Văn Hóa Việt Nam lần thứ 17 với tựa đề “Bữa Cơm Gia Đình” sẽ được tổ chức vào ngày 21 tháng 4 năm 2012 tại Mandeville Auditorium trong khuôn viên của trường UCSD. Đây là một đêm ca múa nhạc kịch, là sự kiện trọng đại nhất trong năm mà tất cả các sinh viên trong hội đã bỏ ra thật nhiều thời gian và tâm huyết để chuẩn bị trong mấy tháng vừa qua.

Chương trình năm nay đã được dàn dựng thật công phu với phần biểu diễn hoành tráng của các người mẫu áo dài, múa truyền thống, phần nhảy hip-hop, và sự góp mặt của những ca sĩ từ trong và ngoài hội.

Kịch bản năm nay dựa trên những vui buồn của cuộc sống gia đình. “Bữa Cơm Gia Đình” sẽ mang lại những vấn để thật là quen thuộc mà rất nhiều gia đình phải trải qua nhưng cũng không thiếu những tình tiết hấp dẫn, những vở đối thoại hài hước và một dàn diễn viên tài năng.

Mục đích của Đêm Văn Hóa là để động viên và nhắc nhở các bạn trẻ nên giữ gìn ngôn ngữ, nâng niu nguồn gốc của mình và lấy làm tự hào dòng về máu Việt Nam.

ABOUT THE PLAY

In a survey sent out to the parents of our VSA members, we asked: “If you were to speak for millions of Vietnamese people on the planet, what would you say that they value the most?”. They answered “family”. So for our 17th Annual Culture Night, we wanted to revolve our play around the most essential part of the Vietnamese culture– the family.

With that in mind, we wanted to give you, the audience, a glimpse into the lives of 4 specific families: Bi & his mom, Mary & her dad, Lyly’s family and Bà Tám’s family. Each of these 4 families has their own set of characteristics and issues but together, their unique stories speak of family values, respect, love and appreciation.

As children, we looked forward to dinner time with a simple childish excitement: we like to eat! As we grow older, we realize the importance of these family meals and look forward to them not just for the good food but mainly for the people who will be there at the dinner table. We realize that not only do these family dinners provide us with the supply of nutrients necessary for our bodies, they also provide the perfect setting to connect with our family members, the strength and support that keep us going and the love that keeps us warm and happy long after the meal. Dinner time is also when a lot of family activities happen. Sometimes we fight over dinner, we talk about the future, discuss matters or sometimes we laugh our way through dinner. But whatever we do, dinner time is a time where all members of the family come together, and it is definitely an important part of the day in the Vietnamese culture. Hence, we wanted to title the play after our all-time favorite family time and present to you 4 families, each with their own flavor profile.

With the play this year, our intention is to bring the small details of family life to your attention. We’re talking about those moments that were so ordinary but became so special and unforgettable when they replayed in your head. They are the moments when you think of your beloved family member and the way that they would talk or the way that they would act to realize just how important that person is to you.

Now we all have our own ideas of what a perfect family dinner or a perfect family looks like, but do we know one when we see it? Through Family Dinner, we want you to think about: “How much do you value and how hard are you willing to work for your idea of a perfect family?”

UVSA Tet Festival 2012 raises nearly $500,000 in revenue

Garden Grove, CA – This past Sunday, the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of Southern California (UVSA) announced the Tet Festival 2012 finances at the Post-Tet Festival Press Conference, Staff Appreciation, and Miss Vietnam of Southern California Coronation banquet at Mon Cheri Banquet. A total of $496,695.76 was received in total revenues, $269,510.10 was spent on total expenses, a net profit of $227,185.66 was reported, and a total of $83,592.83 will be donated to the Southern California community through the UVSA Community Assistance Fund (see detailed list attached).

UVSA Tet Festival 2012 Directors

Since 1982, UVSA has been organizing the Tet Festival in Little Saigon, providing an opportunity for the Vietnamese American community in Southern California to celebrate the Vietnamese Lunar New Year.  In 2002, UVSA established a Community Assistance Fund whereas 50% of the net proceeds from each year’s Tet Festival would go back to the community by means of grants.  All non-profit, non-political organizations are eligible to apply for this grant, with priority given to organizations which serve communities in Little Saigon and throughout Southern California. From 2001-2011, UVSA has given back more than $1 million. Community Assistance Fund applications will be accepted from today until Sunday, May 20^th, 2012 (see application attached).

Each year, the Tet Festival draws in between 50,000-100,000 visitors throughout California, the United States, and around the world with more than 300 vendor and sponsor booths.  More importantly, the festival emphasizes on promoting Vietnamese culture and tradition with special features such as Vietnamese cultural village, traditional royal court procession, Vietnamese wedding, and cultural performances.  Over the course of six months, more than 200 volunteers and 30 community organizations come together to put on this 3-day event that has truly become a community festival.

As a non-profit, non-partisan, community-based organization, UVSA was founded in 1982 as a mean for youths to organize socially and politically within the local community.  UVSA exists to advocate for the educational, social, political, and cultural welfare of the Vietnamese American community.  Currently, UVSA represents VSAs from 13 universities and over 15 high schools throughout Southern California.  For more information, please visit www.UVSA.org.

Over the past weeks, Vietnamese Americans across the United States have had the privilege of being part of the exceptional exercise in the organization and mobilization of our community. The petition drive spearheaded by Saigon Broadcasting Television Network (SBTN) on February 8^th has sparked a collaboration effort of numerous organizations and Vietnamese Americans nationwide.

Here at Southern California, in an effort to support the struggle for democracy and human rights by youth activist in Vietnam and to join in solidarity with Vietnamese communities around the world supporting the democracy movement, the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations of Southern California have joined hands with other youth organizations in mobilizing the community by gathering over 4,000 signatures in the course of 2 days to petition U.S. President and Congress to speak up against the human rights conditions in Vietnam.

As of today, thousands of people have signed on to the House Resolution 484 and over 115,000 people have signed on to the White House’s petition. Both petition and House Resolution 484 call on the Government of Vietnam to unconditionally release all human rights and democracy activists, prisoner of conscience, including song writer and singer Viet Khang, Ms. Bui Thi Minh Hang, and 17 Vietnamese Catholic youth and more.

Among the invitations, I’m delighted to be one of the few that was invited for the “White House Briefing with National Vietnamese American Leaders” to represent UVSA in a gathering with officials from the Obama’s Administration, young Vietnamese leaders, a panel of human rights and global partnership experts.

With that said if you had a chance to speak to the officials from the Obama’s Administration or President Obama himself, what questions would you like to ask relevant to this democracy movement?
