The Vietnamese Student Union (VSU) at UCLA proudly invites you to the 32nd Annual Vietnamese Culture Night on Monday, January 16, 2012 at UCLA Royce Hall, from 7 PM to 10 PM.

Chasing Bets
Nga Re Cuoc Doi

Vietnamese Culture Night 2012 proudly presents Chasing Bets-Nga Re Cuoc Doi. This year’s show is a night about pushing your luck, whether with love or money. The drama follows the lives of a Vietnamese family- starring the parents, eldest son, and two younger sisters. A story about loyalty, addiction, and love; Vietnamese-American daughter, Mai, must face the battle between being a loyal Vietnamese sister, while pursuing her own love with an interracial engagement. Through Mai’s struggle, we learn deep and hidden secrets about her entire family that mirrors many stories within the Southeast Asian community today. In unprecedented times, each member of the family faces a set of challenges unique to their generation. Follow our characters in their quest for strength, identity, opportunity, and most importantly, the value of family during difficult times. Chasing Bets is not only about chasing material wealth, but any bet that has the possibility to change everything.

CSULA’s Winter Baller this Saturday

CSULA VSA is hosting their annual Winter Baller Event
this Saturday, January 7th from 6pm and until 10pm.
The price is $10 pre-sale and $12 at the door. This year’s theme is a masquerade with the theme colors silver, red, and navy blue.
With admission, you will get food and chips to gamble with. You can gamble to get tickets to participate in a drawing for prizes.
Part of the proceeds will go to the Children of Vietnam.
If you would like to attend, you can contact CSULA VSA’s ICC Christopher Nguyen (626 759 3484), their president Thanh Ho (thanh.ho@uvsa.org), or your own school’s ICC representative.

Hello Prospective Tet Volunteers,

I am happy to announce that the Tet Festival 2012 General Volunteers Application is now available! If you want to volunteer and are not already in a committee or not sure what you want to do but know you want to help, this is the perfect committee to be a part of. Without the volunteers committee, we wouldn’t be able to run such a successful Tet Festival. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out both forms. One is the Application and the other is the Medical Authorization and Consent Form. You will need to fill out both forms in order to be considered to volunteer. You will also need to fill out your medical information and need a parent signature if you are under 18 years old.

For more information about the Volunteers Committee, please come to the Volunteers Informational Meeting on Sunday, December 4th at 11:00am at the UVSA office.

The forms are due by December 11th @ 3:00pm. You must turn in your form to the UVSA office (or have your club president or someone else turn them in for you). We are only accepting hard copies of the application. No online submissions will be accepted. If you have any questions regarding volunteering, feel free to contact Christy Nguyen (UVSA/colleges) at christynguyen@ymail.com or Jackie Nguyen (VAHSA/high school) at jackie.nguyen@uvsa.org. You will also be able to contact me, Khanh Tran, with any questions at khanh.tran@uvsa.org.

Please forward this to your respective schools or anyone who is interested in volunteering at the Tet Festival (which is from January 27th – 29th). Please be aware that you will need to do at least 2 shifts, but we prefer those who are available for at least 3 shifts.

Dear Prospective Student,

High school graduation is not far off and you’ve probably started thinking about what you’re going to do after high school. Have you thought about all the possible options available to you? Did college ever cross your mind? If so, do you want to find out if going to a University, Cal State, or Junior College is for you? Would you like help on tackling your college application, especially your personal statement? Do you want to get an idea of what it feels like to be a college student? Do you want to learn all this without having to pay for it? If any of these apply to you, come to Vietnamese Student Union’s 28th Annual VSU High School Conference.

Vietnamese Student Union is proud to announce the Fall 2011 VSU High School Conference at UCLA on Saturday, November 19th, 2011 from 6:30 A.M. to 8:30 P.M.This is a free event with free food and local transportation. You don’t have to be Vietnamese to apply. This year, we are gathering 150 high school students and youth like you all across California to promote the importance of higher education, learn all options and routes to achieving it, and have fun along the way.

The day will be filled with workshops and various activities that will help you prepare for college. Topics will range from how to apply for financial aid, which form of higher education is for you, what you should be doing in high school now, what major or career is for you, why education is such a powerful tool, and more. There will also be a tour of our beautiful campus so you can familiarize yourself with the environment. In addition, there will be current college students as well as alumni present so you can ask them any questions you might have about student life.

If you are interested, please fill out the application along with the permission form and liability form. Make sure to have your parent or guardian’s signature. Remember to turn in your application as soon as possible because this is a selective process based on time of submission and on who will benefit most from the event. Lastly, the due date is (as listed above) November 2nd, 2010 by 11:59pm.

UVSA at Freedom Park candlelight demonstration

The event is about “protesting” against China and the Vietnamese Communist Government for wrongfully signing over the Paracel and Spratly Islands to the Chinese as well as China claiming to own them and are fining & killing our people when they enter the area to fish. The argument is that the islands belong to South Viet Nam not the the communist government, therefore it does not belong to China although the communist government signed it over on 09-14-1958. There will also be live entertainment provided by Asia Entertainment. If you live out of state. Please tune in to SBTN channel.

We are also in need of volunteers to help direct VIPs to their seats as well helping out with the candlelight ceremony. Although it is a school night, I highly encourage VAHSA students to attend and help so that it will let them see what the community is working towards, give them a chance to work with the community, as well as professionalism.

CSUF VSA celebrates Tết Trung Thu this Tuesday

You may have heard CSUF VSA is having their first general meeting on Tuesday, September 20 from our last post about our ICC schools’ first general meetings, BUUUUUT to kick off a wonderful they’re hosting their 2nd annual Tết Trung Thu celebration! If you aren’t familiar with Tết Trung Thu, it is known as the Mid Autumn Moon Festival. Basically a harvest festival during the September/October season (right before other harvests, like Thanksgiving!), it is predominately celebrated by the Chinese and Vietnamese. Moon cakes and lanterns are staples of the Mid-Autumn festival celebration.

What am I saying? Come to the event this Tuesday to see a bit of what I’m talking about!

VAHSA’s 1st meeting!

The Vietnamese American High School Alliance of Southern California is ready to kick off a new year! Their first meeting is on Sunday, September 18 at the lovely UVSA Office, 10 AM on the dot. This will be a general body meeting, so everyone is invited! You do not have to be a current member to attend; to learn more though, contact VAHSA’s President Jackqueline at vahsa.jackie@gmail.com.

Expect to meet many student representatives and general members from high schools all over southern California! Get to know the new VAHSA cabinet and meet some of the UVSA staff and members who will also be attending and supporting our younger brothers and sisters!

Also, the chairman and staff of UVSA’s ACE Mentorship Program will be attending so if you’ve been interested in becoming a mentor or mentee, this will be the perfect opportunity.
